Palestine and the Pope
Vatican officially recognizes Palestine, while Israel fumes
The Vatican has become the latest country to recognize the state of Palestine, after a new treaty was finalized on Wednesday. Unsurprisingly Israel has hit out at the move, saying that it damages prospects for peace in the region.
The treaty, which was agreed, though has yet to be formally signed states the Vatican has switched its diplomatic allegiance from the Palestinian Liberation Organization to the state of Palestine. It was finalized days before the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is due to visit Pope Francis.
Abbas is traveling to the Vatican to attend the canonization of four new saints by the Pope, two of which are Palestinian nuns. The move to grant them sainthood has been described as a "sign of hope" for the region by the Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, Fouad Twal, Vatican Insider reports.
The Vatican has been unofficially referring to the state of Palestine for over a year. Pope Francis visited Israel last year and the Vatican’s official program referred to Abbas as the president of the state of Palestine. During his visit to the Holy Land, he called for peace from both sides.
A spokesman for the Vatican, the Reverend Federico Lombardi confirmed the news saying: "Yes, it's a recognition that the state exists," AP reports.
The decision has brought condemnation from Israel, with the country’s foreign ministry saying it was “disappointed” at the move.
"This move does not promote the peace process and distances the Palestinian leadership from returning to direct and bilateral negotiations," the ministry said in a text message, AP reported. "Israel will study the agreement and will consider its steps accordingly."
Vatican Foreign Minister Monsignor Antoine Camilleri said the move was not politically motivated, but was simply in line with the Holy See’s position.
In 2012, the Vatican welcomed a decision by the UN General Assembly to recognize Palestine as a non-member observer state. However, the latest treaty is the first legal document between the Vatican and the state of Palestine, which can be considered as official diplomatic recognition.
The treaty in question concerns the activity of the Catholic Church in Palestine. In April 2014, a Catholic Monastery was vandalized not far from the Israeli capital of Jerusalem in a hate crime carried out by Israelis. Slogans condemning peace talks with Palestine as well as graffiti disparaging Jesus and Mary was daubed on the walls.
This is not the first time that Pope Francis has made a diplomatic decision that was not to everyone’s liking. In April, he honored the 100th anniversary of the slaughter of Armenians by Ottoman Turks and called it “the first genocide of the 20th century.”
During a mass at the Armenian Catholic rite at Peter’s Basilica, the Pope said he had a duty to honor the innocent men, women, children, priests and bishops who were murdered by the Ottoman Turks.
“Concealing or denying evil is like allowing a wound to keep bleeding without bandaging it,” said the pontiff.

Much of Beijing was blanketed by the worst sandstorm in years on Wednesday evening.
Many residents rushed home, fearing traffic would come to a standstill, after the national observatory issued a sandstorm yellow alert – the third-most serious – that visibility would drop below 1,000 metres.
Many areas in the capital recorded PM10 air pollution readings of nearly 1,000 micrograms per cubic metre, a level considered hazardous. The US embassy’s readings of PM2.5 particulates – considered most dangerous to human health – exceeded 300, also considered hazardous.
There were traffic jams in most major districts of the city.
The Legal Mirror reported that it was the strongest sandstorm in Beijing in 13 years. Strong winds are expected in the capital until Thursday afternoon.
Parts of Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Tianjin, Gansu, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei and Jilin were also affected by dust, according to the National Meteorological Centre.
Authorities urged people to stay indoors, but those who ventured outside posted erie, red-tinged photos online showing smudged outlines of buildings and even people.
“It’s very dirty, I feel like it is the end of the world,” said one internet user.
Another wrote: “It feels like we are living in a desert. I wonder how we can survive such bad weather.”
In another development, a strong cold front swept across north China including areas along the Yellow and Huai rivers, bringing a temperature drop of about 12 degrees Celsius.

Attorney General Eric Holder sent a memo to employees of the Department of Justice Friday, reminding them that soliciting prostitutes is against agency rules and that violation of those rules could lead to suspension or termination.
“The solicitation of prostitution threatens the core mission of the Department, not simply because it invites extortion, blackmail, and leaks of sensitive or classified information, but also because it undermines the Department's efforts to eradicate the scourge of human trafficking,” the memo said.
The memo was sent weeks after a Justice Department watchdog report alleged several Drug Enforcement Administration agents attended "sex parties" with prostitutes in an unnamed “host country” paid for by local drug cartels.
The alleged parties took place over a period of several years. According to the report by the Justice Department inspector general, the parties were even held in agents' U.S. government-leased quarters.
The IG report found such allegations often went unreported or underreported, or were not pursued properly.
Holder said in the memo Friday that the prohibition on soliciting prostitutes also applies when employees are off duty, or in a foreign country where prostitution is legal.
The Department of Justice is in the process of reviewing security clearances of the DEA employees who attended the parties, and is investigating the disciplinary process following the accusations of sexual misconduct, a senior law enforcement official told Fox News.
"Department leadership takes very seriously the allegations laid out in the IG's report and acted quickly to remind all employees that they are prohibited from participating in commercial sex acts and will be suspended or terminated for violating the policy,” a Justice Department spokeswoman said in a statement Friday.

) I find myself waking up to be in my early thirties, overweight (5'-10 or 11"" 250lbsish) full black as compared to my 3/4 buddy who I am hanging out with as this dream goes... Following two Black guys lives ... as I joke around having some great one liners ... Cool personality ... Yeah flirty with the women that stroll in, as my buddy and I struggle to make ends meat...
He is like 6'-1" and 230lbs ... Just separated - because he could not keep his job and had to move.. as he has some good come back lines.. Not sure- Has/Had - a woman "back home" that he is almost religiously faithfull too... as the dream skips in and out as we do odd jobs together ... I find out I was a part time Taxi-cab driver... Though hard to keep a job ... as dealing with "prejudice" with a sense of humor is at the forefront between us two...
Just a couple guys on the outskirts of a big city ... telling some stories (life/love) of how we got to where we are.. bros'
Talking smack ... for about a month of high lights ... Leading up to us landing a job "behind the cameras" filming a high school basketball game (mostly white crowd, white school ... ) him in one upper corner, and I in the other upper corner opposite the main (control booth) in the mid-floor on the other side ... we were all miked up joking around filming the game... as my buddy and I had the crew in the main booth laughing at times... as we were even singing
(whisper singing and dancing when things got slow... to a point where they turn the cameras and mikes on us "goofing around singing and dancing and talking" that went "Viral" (that rare moment as two black guys in an mostly all white environment singing and dancing... Stepping to the sides of our cameras ... In perfect whisper key pitch singing blurts of songs like shout outs .. hamming it up.. ) as the crowd was standing and facing the wrong way as this was happen... made it all that much more...Dream skips as we are out in the sun playing some basketball, not real worrying about the future due to the "viral clip" and a very "Hot looking black women" steps out of a cab ... come looking for her man ... (My Faithful buddy) ... I say to him... Yeah, I would be faithful too if I had ... as I tell him to get out of here (I know he's a goner!)
